The lawmaker representing Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, has suspended the inauguration of his constituency projects citing security reasons.
In a statement on Friday signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Gideon Ayodele, the senator also put on hold the planned thanksgiving service to thank God for surviving alleged attacks.
The embattled lawmaker said the tour of his constituency and inauguration of projects which commenced on July 18, was marred by violence.
Melaye said: “You would recall that several weeks ago I announced plan to tour my Kogi West senatorial district and as well use the opportunity to commission numerous projects I facilitated for my constituents in different locations.
“The inauguration of projects started on Wednesday, July 18, despite the unwarranted arson on two schools in Lokoja Local Government area, which can only be the handiwork of my political enemies.
“It has become necessary to put out this statement in the face of Thursday’s unprovoked Police assault on my entourage while returning from Yagba Federal Constituency where I went to commission my constiuency projects.”
He stated that all the programmes would have to be put on hold in view of concerns arising from the security situation.
The Kogi State Police Command on Thursday summoned Senator Dino Melaye to report at the State Criminal and Investigation Department after his armed guards fired on a team of policemen on patrol duties in the state.
A police sergeant was the victim of the shooting, the police said and is recuperating in the hospital.
