The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is set to conduct vulnerability and capacity assessment to ascertain areas that are prone to disasters in the state.

Executive Secretary of SEMA, Aminu Waziri who disclosed this on Thursday, while presenting relief materials to internally displaced persons said the measure was in line with the Agency’s commitment towards being proactive.

Waziri said the Agency was determined to act in line with the current global trend which emphasises disaster risk management adding “we are trying to make the Agency proactive by having preventive strategies”.

He said arrangements had been concluded to undertake holistic study of areas across the state with a view to determining what category of disaster is peculiar to a given area and how best government could act to prevent its occurrence.

The SEMA Boss noted that the assessment is billed to commence in two weeks and expressed optimism that the assessment report will enhance effective disaster management in the state.

He hinted that in line with the restoration and change mantra of the APC administration in the state, the Agency was being re-branded and repositioned for effective disaster management.

Presenting the materials, the SEMA Boss said the IDPs are 283 comprising of 40 households “all of whom were displaced following the unfortunate disaster that occurred in the North East”.

He said the IDPs were in a state of serious and urgent needs hence the decision of SEMA to provide support to them and lauded the state governor, Aminu Bello Masari who providing all necessary support to the Agency in discharging its duties.
