With the release of Newcastle's new 'blue caraçao' third kit, the Magpies have a fine-looking collection of strips to don the upcoming Premier League season in.

Including retro throwbacks and striking new colours, as well as the traditional black and white home strip, the design team at Puma have certainly delivered this season and might just have produced one of the best sets of Newcastle kits in recent memory.

Though, there have certainly been some good contenders. We count down seven of the best looking Newcastle kits of recent seasons:

7. Newcastle 2017/18 Home Kit

With last season's home kit, designers Puma went back to the club's roots - all as part of Newcastle United's 125th anniversary - and they produced a kit to mark the occasion beautifully.

With clean, retro-inspired stripes that harked back to the simpler days of football, the kit oozed class.

The red numbers added to the effect and made a home shirt that was exciting in the modern game, while still being reminiscent of the good old days of Newcastle's past.

6. Newcastle 2016/17 Third Kit

Worn during Newcastle's battle back from the Championship, the third kit was something a bit different and really caught the eye.

The striking, plain white design stood out and the purple accents added something a bit more unique to what was a very nice third kit. It's just a shame it didn't see more game time.

The numbers on the back being black instead of continuing the purple theme seemed strange, but it was a really clean and nice kit from Puma all the same.

5. Newcastle 2011/12 Third Kit

Third kits have always been the strong suit of Newcastle's kit designers Puma in recent seasons, and the company's 2011/12 offering was no different.

While there wasn't too much creative license taken in the colours, sticking to an all black ensemble with some white trim and gold accessory, the overall look of the kit was classy and well-designed.

It looked clean and impressive, and offered fans a less vibrant alternative to the luminous orange away shirt of that season.

4. Newcastle 2011/12 Home Kit

As Puma's first Newcastle home kit, you could have forgiven the company for being a little cautious.

However, in the 2011/12 kit, they were far from it - mixing up the classic black and white stripes dramatically, without getting rid of the historic feature.

It was a risk, but it ended up coming together brilliantly to produce one of the best-looking, unique and most memorable Newcastle home kits since the turn of the decade.

3. Newcastle 2017/18 Third Kit

Puma pulled out all the stops for Newcastle's return to the Premier League, not only in the home kit but also with this stunning third kit.

The two-tone black stripes kept the club's iconic style and one of its main colours, while still producing something really unique and different.

The gold sponsor looked brilliant on the front of the shirt, and it's just a shame that Puma went for white numbering instead of gold.

Either way, though, it was still a great addition to the Newcastle kit locker.

2. Newcastle 2013/14 Third Kit

If you're going to take inspiration from a national team for your third kit, then why not make it Brazil.

That was clearly Puma's logic in 2013/14, and they produced something that will likely live on long in the memories of passionate Newcastle fans - affectionately being dubbed 'the Brazil kit'.

It didn't get many run-outs in the season, but the kit also seemed to pass on some South American magic to the team when it did, as fans watched as the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Loic Remy and Moussa Sissoko played more like Garrincha, Zico, and Socrates.

1. Newcastle 2013/14 Member's Kit

A bit of a strange one in 2013/14 from Puma, as the member's kit saw just one match - a pre-season friendly against Braga.

Released without warning at a time when there was little news about Newcastle's home kit for the upcoming season, fans worried Puma might have risked doing away with the stripes.

They hadn't, which was good news, and had instead simply produced a wonderfully designed special kit that club members could purchase.

It remains a shame it was limited to that single appearance, as it was beautifully created and a design likely never to be seen again for Newcastle. It would have made a lovely third kit.
