Education Funding: FG Injects N10.1bn in Q4 2025
The federal government injected N10.1 billion into Nigeria's education sector during the last quarter of 2025, providing grants, stipends for vocational students, and funding for menstrual health campaigns.
During the final quarter of 2025, the federal government allocated a substantial N10.1 billion to the education sector. A detailed breakdown of these expenditures reveals a N50 million grant initiative, a collaborative effort between the federal government and the Bank of Industry (BoI), designed to enhance capacity building opportunities for students in tertiary education through the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG).
Key Investment Areas
Within the reviewed quarter, N2.97 billion in stipends was disbursed to approximately 160,000 vocational students. Additionally, N4.6 billion was provided to bolster skills training centres under the Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme. In a bid to alleviate menstrual pain and promote welfare, the federal government also launched a N2.55 billion menstrual health campaign, aiming to deliver over one million sanitary pads to 370,000 girls residing in rural and underserved areas.
Dr Olatunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, speaking on the government’s interventions during this period, underscored that the financial support reflects a steadfast commitment to improving literacy within the education sector. He highlighted the six-point agenda under the Nigerian Educational Sector Renewed Initiative (NESRI), which is strategically focused on transitioning the country from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based one. “The strategic goal of the six-point agenda is to reduce out-of-school children, learning poverty and increase skills and human capital for the labour market,” he affirmed.
School Safety and Staff Welfare
The Minister also conveyed the federal government’s dedication to ensuring safety in schools, noting that the ministry is establishing a dedicated school safety department. This department will support the existing security framework and infrastructure across all schools nationwide. He further disclosed that security agencies are working diligently to enhance safety and security throughout all educational institutions in Nigeria, with the government reportedly achieving remarkable successes in its ongoing offensive against insurgents.
“The federal Ministry of Education partners with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to improve the security and safety of our schools via a real-time tracking system for school safety,” he stated. Dr Alausa emphasised the federal government's improved welfare provisions for academic staff, citing a 40 per cent upward review of academic emoluments and a revised salary structure comprising CONUASS and CATA under a new agreement signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities. He expressed satisfaction that, after a twenty-year negotiation period, this agreement has finally been implemented, bringing contentment to ASUU members with the current administration.
