Voters in Ekiti
The 2018 governorship election in Ekiti state was devoid of global best practices, a coalition of domestic and international election observers who monitored the election has said.
The election produced former governor of the state and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kayode Fayemi, as winner.
Fayemi, who contested for a second tenure, defeated the incumbent deputy governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kolapo Olusola and 33 other candidates.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the APC candidate polled 197,459 votes to beat his closest rival, Olusola, who got 178,121 votes.
But the PDP has since rejected the results, claiming the election was a ”daylight robbery.”
And in their submissions, the observers, comprising representatives from more than 50 domestic organizations, based their report on lapses noticed in the conduct of the election.
They particularly faulted the role of security operatives.
