WWE Superstar, Emma, suffered a ruptured disc in her back at a live event Sunday and will undergo surgery to repair the damage, the company announced on Monday.
WWE ringside physician, Dr. Chris Robinson commented on Emma’s status, via the company release.
“Emma has a ruptured disc that will require her to have surgery. She came to us in a great deal of pain, which seemed to be increasing. She was then given an MRI, which revealed that further action would need to be taken. Unfortunately, the Superstar’s estimated recovery time cannot be determined until after her procedure is complete.”
Recall that Emma, 27, recently returned to the main roster after an NXT run that featured a spirited heel turn.
She has been embroiled in a budding program with Becky Lynch in the last few weeks, which saw the debut of Dana Brooke on last week’s Raw.
The timing here couldn’t possibly be worse. Emma and Lynch appeared to be working toward a match of some sort, perhaps with Brooke’s involvement, at the upcoming Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
It may also affect how they were going with the storyline as a whole. Brooke and Emma were a dynamic heel duo in NXT, and Dana’s attack on Becky last week could set up a potential tag team match. Sasha Banks could have been roped into the fold given her relationship with Lynch from earlier in the year.
With Banks all but absent from television since the Triple Threat match at WrestleMania, this injury could have unintended consequences for her as well.
Still, it’s Emma who loses big here. Her first main roster run was a pronounced failure, with the cult NXT favorite not getting over with the bigger audience.
The heel turn has done wonders for her character development and feels far more natural; she, Charlotte and Dana could be the true villains the women’s division has always lacked.
Getting injured in her first real shot back on the main roster is just a stroke of bad luck.
