Arsenal moved top of the Premier League table for 24 hours at least by beating 10-man Everton at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.
Arsenal went top of the Premier League for the first time since February 2014 as headers from Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny defeated Everton.
The Gunners took the lead in the 36th minute through Olivier Giroud. Mesut Ozil lofted a superbly weighted ball into the box, and the France international helped it past goalkeeper Tim Howard with his head.
The second came just two minutes afterwards. Santi Cazorla took a free kick from the left and the Everton defence was nowhere to be seen as Laurent Koscielny headed in. However, Everton were soon back in the game as Ross Barkley’s shot deflected off Gabriel and beat Petr Cech.
Romelu Lukaku hit the bar 12 minutes from time, however, the Toffees could not find a leveller.
Gareth Barry was sent off deep into stoppage time after receiving another yellow card.
Arsenal could be knocked off the top of the table today if Manchester City avoid defeat in their trip to Old Trafford to face rivals Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s terrible start to the season plumbed new depths on Saturday when the Premier League champions lost 2-1 at West Ham United, manager Jose Mourinho was banished from the dugout and midfielder Nemanja Matic was sent off.
The Hammers soared to second in the table, at least until Arsenal play Everton in the late kickoff, and Manchester United play league leaders Manchester City today.
