Nigeria's Falconets encountered a challenging start to their FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup campaign in Poland, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against a formidable Spain side. The match, played on Monday evening at the Sosnowiec stadium, saw the European Under-19/Under-20 champions deliver a commanding performance.

The Spanish squad, known for their prowess on the pitch, proved too strong for the Moses Aduku-led Falconets. Spain asserted their dominance early, maintaining significant possession and creating numerous attacking opportunities from the outset of the Group F fixture.

The opening goal for Spain arrived in the 13th minute. A well-orchestrated sequence of passes disorientated the Nigerian defence, allowing Marisa Garcia to surge into the penalty area and deftly slot home a cutback from the wing, giving Spain a deserved lead.

Throughout the first half, Nigeria managed only a solitary attempt on the Spanish goalkeeper. Despite implementing a double substitution at the half-time interval, the Falconets found it challenging to penetrate Spain's resolute defence during their limited spells in possession of the ball.

Spain subsequently solidified their advantage and secured victory in the 73rd minute. Alba Cerrato collected a pass within the box and expertly dispatched the ball past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma at her near post, doubling their lead.

The two-time silver medallists at the women’s U20 World Cup, Nigeria, now have the opportunity to regroup for their next fixture. Their second match in the tournament will be against China PR, who commenced their campaign with a decisive 5-0 victory over New Caledonia in an earlier Group F encounter.
