Wimbledon Stabbing: Man Dies After High Street Attack
A man, Luke Brereton, 40, tragically died following a fatal stabbing in Wimbledon town centre, south west London, early last Sunday morning, with police launching a murder investigation and one man now charged.
Luke Brereton, a 40-year-old from Mitcham, was tragically killed during a night out on Wimbledon’s busy high street. The fatal incident occurred shortly after half past midnight on Sunday, 22nd February.
Metropolitan Police officers were summoned to The Broadway, Wimbledon, at 12:37 am, following reports of a stabbing. Emergency services quickly arrived on scene and located Mr Brereton, but despite their valiant efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
His heartbroken family laid flowers at the spot where he collapsed yesterday afternoon. They chose not to make any public statements, and the Met confirmed that they are receiving support from specialist officers.
Arrest and Charges
Yesterday afternoon, Amar Zafar, of Cambridge Grove Road, Kingston, was formally charged in connection with the fatal attack. He faces charges of murder and possession of a bladed article.
Investigation Continues
Forensic officers have been meticulously searching for clues at the scene. Detectives are currently examining CCTV footage of the incident, which they have successfully obtained as part of their ongoing investigation.
Local businesses and residents demonstrated their sympathy yesterday by placing floral tributes near the scene, which is surrounded by numerous bars and restaurants. Many of these establishments were open at the time of the incident and are fully cooperating with the police investigation.
Appeal for Witnesses
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley extended his sympathies, stating: "Our thoughts are with the victim’s family. We understand the impact this will have on the local community." He issued an urgent appeal for information, adding: "We still need anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward. No detail is too small."
