At least fifteen retail outlets have been completely destroyed following a significant fire that erupted at the renowned Bodija foodstuffs market, located within the Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. The inferno, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the loss of property and valuable goods estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Official Confirmation and Cause Investigation
Moroof Akinwande, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, officially confirmed the incident in a statement. He attributed the outbreak to a suspected electrical fault originating from one of the affected shops.
Mr. Akinwande praised the prompt response of the firefighting teams, highlighting that their timely arrival was instrumental in preventing the blaze from spreading further across the market. The statement elaborated on the emergency operation:
βThe firefighting crew, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Bamidele, promptly mobilised and responded to the scene. On arrival, the crew discovered that 15 out of a row of 44 shops had been engulfed by flames and thick smoke billowing from the affected premises.
βThe firefighters immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading beyond where the fire was met.
βThe fire was curtailed without serious damage to the affected shops. The suspected cause of the fire incident was the surge from faulty electrical wiring.β

In the aftermath of the destructive event, Akinwande underscored the crucial importance of installing and regularly maintaining functional fire extinguishers within commercial buildings, shops, and private residences. He stressed that such proactive measures are essential to enable occupants to effectively contain fires during their incipient stages, thereby mitigating significant property damage and potential casualties.
