Finland’s Wolt has raised $12.4 million in funding for ordering food online.
The company is launching its app for local service in Stockholm, Sweden today. Investors include EQT Ventures, Skype founder Niklas Zennström, Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen, and Nokia chairman Risto Siilasmaa. The app is already live in Finland.
The lead investor in the new round is EQT Ventures, which recently started investing in European tech startups.
“We honestly couldn’t think of better partners on the planet to help us on our journey,” said Miki Kuusi, CEO of Wolt and founder of the annual Slush tech conference in Helsinki, in a statement. “EQT Ventures are by far one of the most interesting VC initiatives in Europe in a very long time, really establishing a force to be reckoned with.”
In Finland, more than 100,000 users and 400 restaurants have signed up for Wolt in less than a year. You can place an order in as little as 10 seconds to get restaurant food delivered to your home. Deliveries take an average of 30 minutes, including food preparation time.
“We believe in building something simple that people really love to use. This leads to them telling their friends about Wolt, which has been the cause for our rapid growth so far. Our vision is to be the user interface for all things eating on the mobile phone,” Kuusi said.
