A man attempting to sell his car through Facebook Marketplace was tragically stabbed to death, allegedly by the individual who arrived to purchase the vehicle. Kenny Dale Ashby, a 33-year-old father, was brutally murdered on 3rd July at his residence near Panama City, Florida, while in the process of selling his 2002 Dodge Neon.
On Thursday, Joseph Michael Lynch, aged 47, entered a plea of no contest to the attack, which prosecutors unequivocally described as "senseless and violent." According to reports, Lynch arrived at Ashby's home at approximately 11:30 pm on the night of the murder.
The two men reportedly became embroiled in a heated dispute concerning the car's missing title. Ashby then went inside his house to search for the document. Growing impatient, Lynch allegedly kicked down the front door and repeatedly stabbed the unsuspecting father with a knife.
State attorney Larry Basford disclosed in a press release that Ashby's wife, his young daughter, and three other adults were present in the home during the horrific event. Basford added that Lynch "took their phones before fleeing" the scene.
According to The Daily Mail, Ashby's wife, Ashlee, informed the attacker that there were children in the room, which reportedly prompted him to drop the phones. In her affidavit, she subsequently stated that she called the police, reporting that her husband was "not breathing."
Upon arrival, police discovered Ashby gravely wounded, with "broken glasses and other items strewn about the kitchen." He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of 4th July.
Lynch was located and arrested near the crime scene, despite his initial attempt to flee. He was found lying face down on the ground and reportedly confessed to the crime, telling officers upon his arrest, "I'm the one you are looking for." He had also instructed nearby teenagers to call the police, stating that "something bad had taken place."
During the trial, Prosecutor Peter Overstreet read a powerful statement from Ashby's wife, which recounted the profound impact of her husband's death: "He was not just taken from us, but violently taken and in front of us, leaving a void that can never rebuild. This loss has shattered his family completely. We have no sense of safety anymore, not even in our own home."
Joseph Michael Lynch entered a plea of no contest to charges of murder in the second degree and burglary with assault or battery. Circuit Court Judge Brantley Clark subsequently sentenced him to 40 years in prison.
