Flutterwave's Decade: Celebrating Global Fintech Growth

Flutterwave Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, recently celebrated a decade of the company's operations, reflecting on its remarkable journey from addressing inefficient payment systems in Africa to establishing a globally recognised fintech infrastructure.

Speaking at the firm's 10th anniversary gala night held at 'The Delborough Lagos, Agboola, affectionately known as "GB", described the event as a celebration of shared prosperity, innovation, and the pivotal role Nigeria plays in driving fintech development across the continent.

Recalling the challenges faced in 2015 and 2016, Agboola highlighted that sending money from Lagos to Accra often necessitated routing funds through New York. This process was notably slower than physically transporting cash on an aeroplane, illustrating the severe limitations of the existing payment infrastructure at the time.

Pioneering Seamless Payments and Global Expansion

Flutterwave was established in 2016 with a clear and ambitious mission. Its primary goals included expanding market access for small businesses, enabling seamless cross-border payments, and creating significant opportunities for Nigerians both at home and abroad.

GB acknowledged the presence of esteemed dignitaries at the celebration. Among those attending were former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, as well as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, MTN Nigeria Board Chairman Ernest Ndukwe, and other influential business and industry leaders.

He also expressed gratitude to individuals such as Dr Stanley Uzochukwu, founder of Stanel Group and The Delborough Lagos. His provision of the venue and unwavering support were instrumental in making the anniversary event a resounding success.

A Decade of Integrity and Growth

Highlighting Flutterwave's impressive trajectory, Agboola proudly stated that the company has emerged as the most licensed non-bank entity globally. It now operates across more than 35 countries and possesses over 50 licences worldwide, underscoring its expansive reach and regulatory compliance.

Over the past decade, Flutterwave has processed in excess of one billion transactions, amounting to a staggering total exceeding $50 billion. This considerable volume of financial activity has been conducted while consistently upholding a reputation for integrity and reliability in all its financial dealings.

β€œOur goal has always been to build a payment-agnostic platform that connects commerce, logistics, and payments seamlessly,” Agboola remarked. β€œWe want businesses and consumers to transact easily and create value everywhere.”

He further emphasised Flutterwave's continued deep investment in Nigeria, its home base. The company is also actively empowering businesses to scale internationally, with operations now extending into the U.S., U.K., and European markets through strategic partnerships and robust banking infrastructure.

Agboola concluded by reaffirming Flutterwave’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria as its foundational home and operational base. He underscored that the company’s success serves as a powerful testament to the vast potential of Nigerian innovation on the global stage.

β€œThe Nigerian name, our heritage, should be associated with excellence, growth, and enterprise that scales,” he asserted. He encouraged all attendees and entrepreneurs present to leverage Flutterwave’s advanced platform to expand their businesses successfully across the globe.
