The Dutch football fans were filmed throwing coins at the beggars in the Spanish capital ahead of their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon

Travelling PSV Eindhoven fans have caused controversy in Madrid after they humiliated beggars at the city’s Plaza Mayor.

Footage shows the Dutch club’s supporters chucking money on the ground and watching as the women scramble to pick up the coins, in some cases pushing each other out of the way to get there first.

As this is happening, cheers and demeaning chants appear to come from the PSV contingent.

Reports in the Spanish press say the incident ended when other civilians got involved, giving money to the beggars in a bid to put an end to the episode.

Harrie Timmermans, president of the PSV supporters club, told The Associated Press: “I have seen the pictures and it’s not nice to look at.

“You don’t throw money at people, everyone agrees on that. We are sorry that this has happened.”

PSV are in Madrid to play Atletico in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Vicente Calderon.

The first leg in Eindhoven ended in a goalless draw, leaving both teams still hopeful of being in Friday’s quarter-final draw.
