Mexico's environmental prosecutor (Profepa) has fined Ford over 18 million pesos, the equivalent of $1.05 million, for selling vehicles without proper environmental certifications.
The fine concerns the sale of 4,690 vehicles, missing certificates required under norms regulating gas emissions and noise levels.

According to Reuters, Ford Mexico replied by saying that vehicles meet all required standards and the issue was just procedural, and not an actual violation.

"The fine is due to not obtaining the emissions certificates on time", it stated, reassuring customers as well as media members that it will revamp its procedures so as to avoid another similar occurrence.

This news comes less than a month after Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump called Ford's $1.6 billion investment in a new plant at the country "an absolute disgrace", despite Mexico being the American automaker's fourth largest manufacturing site.
