A foreign manufacturing company, DAG Motorcycle Industry Nigeria Limited is set to establish a multi-billion-naira company in Ogun State. The company is to manufacture a four-wheeler motorcycle.

The company, which currently has one branch in Lagos, is the sole manufacturer of tricycles, popularly known as Keke Marwa and motorcycles.

The Managing Director, Mr. Monish Lakhani, who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital stated the new factory, when fully operational would “transform” the transport industry in Nigeria.

His words: “We are now moving with two and three wheelers in the market but we have developed a four-wheeler product for our new plant.”

He spoke at a seminar organised by Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) on “Building Capacity in the Transportation Sector: Panacea for Economic Downturn: A Case Study of Commercial Motorcycling.”

The chairman of the ACOMORAN, Alhaji Samsudeen Apelogun in his speech stated that seven million Nigerians, including the well educated are commercial motorcyclists throughout the country, hence banning their activities as some states had done “is a great risk to the country,” suggesting instead that government at various levels should find ways of helping okada riders and also assist in strengthening their activities.

The State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun who spoke through the House of Assembly Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi identified motorcyclists as one of the major stakeholders in the transportation business, saying that they had helped in the area of job creation.
