Clint Dempsey has announced his retirement from football, bringing to an end a prolific 14-year career in the professional game.

The former Fulham and Tottenham striker will be best remembered for his exploits on the international stage. The 57 goals he scored for the United States in 141 caps is a national record which he shares with Landon Donovan.

In a statement released by his final club, Seattle Sounders, Dempsey thanked all of his previous clubs and teammates for their support throughout his career.

"After a lot of thought, my family and I have decided that this is the right time for me to step away from the game," said Dempsey.

"I’d like to thank all of the teammates, coaches and support staff that I’ve worked with throughout my career. It has always been my dream to make it as a pro. I’m grateful to have been on this ride.

"I would like to thank all of the fans who have supported me throughout my career with the New England Revolution, Fulham, Tottenham, Seattle Sounders and the U.S. Men’s National Team. Y’all have always made me feel at home, and it is something that I will always remember."

Dempsey began his career with MLS side New England Revolution. A total of 26 goals in three seasons convinced Fulham to take him to the Premier League, and it was at Craven Cottage that he would enjoy the happiest days of his career.

He scored the winner in possibly Fulham's greatest ever result, a 4-1 win over Juventus on the way to the 2009/10 Europa League final.

The 17 league goals he scored in 2011/12 remains the most a Fulham player has ever scored in a single Premier League season.
