Former Nigeria international Yakubu played 60 minutes in a friendly match for National League club Boreham Wood on Saturday.
The 33-year-old former Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Everton forward is thought to live in the area and is without a club, having been released by Super Lig side Kayserispor at the end of the season.
Lining up against another former club Reading, Yakubu was unable to make an impact on the game at Meadow Park as the Championship club thumped their opponents 5-0.
And although he enjoyed the novelty of having the former Premier League star in his side, Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrad was realistic about his chances of agreeing a deal to keep him.
βRealistically I think he has offers and ambitions to play at the highest level available,β Garrard said. βIβll never say never.
βIn terms of today it was just nice to get him involved. He is of a certain level and he is a model pro.β
