Former Senegal coach, Bruno Metsu has died at the age of 59. The Frenchman famously led the African side to the quarter-finals of World Cup 2002, beating reigning champions France and Sweden en route to the last eight in Japan and South Korea. Metsu confirmed to L'Equipe in July this year that he had been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer after complaining of feeling unwell following a match in charge of Al Wasl, where he took the reins after He died in his home town of Coudekerque-Village, in France, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Metsu, who represented the likes of Lille and Anderlecht as a player, enjoyed great success coaching sides in central Asia, clinching the Asian Champions League title with Al Ain in 2003 and the Gulf Cup with UAE in 2007. However, he remains best known for the heroics of 2002 with Senegal, taking the Lions of Teranga to the brink of becoming the first African side to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup, only to be edged out by Turkey during extra-time of their quarter-final. Known as the 'White Sorcerer' for his efforts, he also led Senegal to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in the same year.
