vioFour men who allegedly used broken bottles to assault two Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) were on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, Stanley John, 24, Uguru Friday, 25, Okechukwu Orji, 24, and Chukwudi Solomon, 24, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and resisting lawful arrest.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ndakare Essien, said that the accused assaulted the officials on Dec. 10 at about 3.30 p.m. along Old-Ota Rd., Oke-Odo, Lagos.

He stated that the accused and some others, still at large, assaulted Mr Bidemi Ogundola and Sowemimo Oluwaseyi when they were performing their lawful duties.

β€œOgundola flagged down the truck of the accused to inspect it, asked the driver for his driver licence and vehicle particulars, but he refused to produce them.

β€œOgundola asked for the truck to be towed to their office, amidst the towing, about eight men arrived at the scene to prevent it.

β€œIn the midst of the chaos, they used broken bottles to cut Ogundola and Sowemimo on their faces and other part of their bodies,” he stated.

Essien said that the offences contravened Sections 171, 172 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.

She then adjourned the case to Feb. 10, 2016 for mention.
