France were crowed as the 2018 World Cup champions after a exhilarating 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final.

In a game which saw the balance of power change hands on a number of occasions, it was Les Bleus who prevailed courtesy of goals from Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and a Mario Mandzukic own goal.

Croatia caused France some problems with goals from Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic, but it was not enough to earn them a first ever World Cup title and they instead had to settle for second place.

Here are three things we learned after the thrilling match:

4. Paul Pogba Proved the Doubters Wrong

Paul Pogba came in to this tournament with a whole lot to prove. Two inconsistent seasons with Manchester United left people feeling as though he would never quite live up to the lofty expectations heaped upon him.

He answered all of those critics in superb fashion with a magnificent display in the final. His range of passing was incredible, his defensive work invaluable and he even picked up a wonderful goal to boot.

He answered every criticism thrown at him by putting in the best performance of his career on the biggest stage of them all.

3. Mbappe Will Become the Greatest Player in the World

We all knew that Mbappe was very good. We all knew that he would probably play an important role for France at this year's World Cup. But no one thought he would be as incredible as he was.

He was afraid of no one and stole the show on a number of occasions. He had a quiet first half in the final, but he exploded into life in the second half and twisted the Croatian defence inside out on numerous occasions.

He scored a magnificent goal to round it off and made the world forget that he is just 19 years old. The sky may not be the limit for the youngster.

2. We Just Witnessed the Greatest World Cup Final of the Modern Era

World Cup finals are usually tense affairs, characterised by the fact that neither side really come out of their shell with the fear that they may leave themselves far too exposed.

This was not the case on this occasion. Croatia were the side that instigated the fierce tempo that dictated the flow of the match, and France were more than willing to match that in the second half with some breathtaking counter attacks and free flowing attacking exploits.

It was a game that really could have gone either way and to use the old cliche, on another day it could have been Croatia who were lifting the World Cup trophy and not France.

Both sides have to be credited for providing us with an hour and a half of wonderful football.

1. The Best Team in the World Won the World Cup

France didn't look like world beaters during their group stage matches, but on reflection, they cruised through a rather tricky group with ease.

They then swept Argentina away, dominated both Uruguay and Belgium and then put in a magnificent display in the final to earn their country their second World Cup trophy.

They learned from the mistakes they made in the European Championship final two years ago and Didier Dechamps inspired his side to take the game by the scruff of the neck and prove to everyone why they are the greatest footballing country in the world.

They were fitting champions for the greatest World Cup of the modern era.
