Romeu, who played his part at the Liberty Stadium in Southampton’s fifth victory in their past six games, said: “Of course he should go to the Euros. Fraser is on top form. He is one of the best in this league and one of the best in Europe. We will see how the season ends but he is doing a very good job at the moment.”

Jack Cork, the former Southampton midfielder now at Swansea City, also tipped Forster to be in the England reckoning for Euro 2016.

Who dominated at Liberty Stadium?

“They were tipping Fraser to be England No 1 when he was fully fit, then he had that awful injury. It was terrible. But you can see that his class has stayed with him,” Cork said. “If you can look at his form before the injury and now there is no reason why he shouldn’t go.”

If Southampton continue to perform as they have in recent weeks, Forster could enjoy another sortie into Europe, at the beginning of next season.

This latest victory for Southampton, courtesy of Shane Long’s sixth league goal of the season, has taken the south coast club into Europa League qualification territory and eight points from an automatic Champions League place.

Romeu said: “We are in a good position and we have fought hard to get here. We have to keep doing the same thing as the teams behind us.”

Long settled the issue, 21 minutes from time. Swansea, who looked vulnerable at the back, allowed the Republic of Ireland striker time and space in which to convert a dipping cross from James Ward-Prowse with his head.

Francesco Guidolin, the Swansea manager, said: “When I came here, I didn’t like the look of the table and I don’t like it now. However, that is not what matters now. We just need to be better than we were today.”

Guidolin has allowed the midfielder Matt Grimes to spend the next three months on loan at Blackburn Rovers.
