UNFPAThe United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has observed what it describes as a slow decline in the free distribution of condoms in Nigeria.

Dr. Idowu Araoyinbo, an official of the UN agency, revealed this during an interview with the NANtoday in Calabar.

According to him, Nigeria still needs about 564 million condoms to meet its yearly needs, and the present rate of free condoms distribution in Nigeria was at twenty percent, which signifies a slow decline.

He added that it is compulsory to provide an effective, all-inclusive and comprehensive condom programme if the nation wishes to achieve the planning post-2020 commitments to boost the use of modern contraceptives and decrease the burden of the HIV.

His words, β€œThe percentage of the free condoms that is available in most states in Nigeria is reducing. It is less than 20 percent.

β€œBased on this, we're about to start a pilot programme from Cross River where we will look at how we can engage with government to be the centre of distribution of the condoms.

β€œWe will also invite some key non-governmental organizations (NGOs) across the entire population spectrum that work with young people, female s3x workers and others.

β€œInvariably, we're going to have more accountability and effective monitoring, because government already has a system through which the commodities can be sent to the end users.

β€œWe're trying to leverage on this to ensure that in the next six months, we've a consistent and sustained distribution of condoms

β€œYou know condoms have dual functions, that is, prevention of unintended pregcies and the prevention of s3xually-transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV.

β€œIf the result comes out and it is favorable, we're hoping to expand this to other states.

β€œWe've some young people who work as ward coordinators; they will be the whistle blowers, who will help us to ensure remote monitoring.

β€œWe create awareness, for instance, through town hall meetings.

β€œPeople are aware that condoms are coming into their community and it will be assessed at particular points; if there are challenges with people accessing the condom, the people will raise the alarm.
