The club's American owners were stunned by the scale of Saturday's exodus and have moved swiftly to repair relations with supporters

Fenway Sports Group have responded to the first walkout protest in Liverpool's history by apologising and freezing ticket prices at 2015-16 levels for next season.

An estimated 10,000 supporters exited Anfield on 77 minutes against Sunderland on Saturday in opposition to the cost structure unveiled last week, which rendered the most expensive ticket in the new Main Stand at £77 for the 2016-17 campaign.

The exodus was preceded by an impassioned chorus of You’ll Never Walk Alone, followed by chants of “you greedy b*st*rds, enough is enough.”

The club’s owners were stunned by the scale of the protest and held talks over reviewing ticket prices in the aftermath.

FSG have now confirmed that the highest matchday fee for a general admission ticket will remain at £59.

The top season ticket price will freeze at £869. At the other end of the scale, the lowest general admission ticket is £9, which will be offered for every Premier League game with an allocation of 10,000 tickets across the campaign. The lowest season ticket is £685.

There is also a removal of game categorisations, so regardless of the opposition, supporters will pay the same price for tickets. The initiatives of 20,000 half-price tickets for 17-21 year-olds and 1,000 free tickets for local school children remain.

In an open letter to supporters, FSG apologised for the distressed caused by their initial cost structure. They also rejected the notion that they only care about profit and not the club's fans, which they state is not in keeping with their actions since acquiring Liverpool.

However, John W Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon, did admit that aspects of last week’s ticket announcement which they erred in. “The widespread opposition to this element of the plan has made it clear that we were mistaken,” their statement read.

“We believe we have demonstrated a willingness to listen carefully, reconsider our position, and act decisively. The unique and sacred relationship between Liverpool Football Club and its supporters has always been foremost in our minds. It represents the heartbeat of this extraordinary football club.”
