Following the recent removal of fuel subsidy which has lead to an astronomical rise in the price of petrol, afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti has called on all Nigerians to ignore imported petrol.
The singer took to his Instagram page on Thursday, May 12, urging all Nigerians to boycott imported petrol.
He wrote: βNNPC gets its dollars directly from crude sales, so it doesnβt have to source from secondary sources. NNPC refines its petrol locally, so why are they increasing their pump price if this is just deregulation and subsidy removal? This is a price hike or NNPC has been getting subsidy also? #saynotoimportedpetrol. How much will NNPC sell petroleum since they source locally? It has to be at the old prices right. Dear Nigerians this is our chance to fight back without the NLC or any trade union.
βItβs simple. #saynotoimportedpetrol. Letβs all only buy from NNPC stations. We have already been queuing for months. This sacrifice will hurt them more than us. Anyone that wants to sell fuel in Nigeria should refine it in Nigeria. This will boost the economy and provide plenty jobs and also plenty petrol.
#saynotoimportedpetrol. Letβs shut them down. They always say we canβt sacrifice and organise as a people. Letβs start here, itβs simple we just have to #saynotoimportedpetrol.
βIf Buhari was truly fearless, his directive should have been, all marketers must build refinery before they can sell. That way the hardship will be on a few not the many!! Like we donβt know they want to use our sweat to recoup election expenses incurred by their government chicken boys. These people have made billions based on licenses issued in the name of the Nigerian people, itβs time to force them to put some back in the Nigerian people not David Cameronβs backyard. Thatβs fantastically corrupt.
β#saynotoimportedpetrol Diesel has been deregulated since 2005. 11 years later, the so called βmarket forcesβ have driven price down by only 15 percent. In 11 years not a single diesel refinery has been invested in with all the stupendous profits they have made. Donβt fall for the okie doke. #saynotoimportedpetrol.β
