The former Manchester United captain, who has failed to win any of his eight Primera Liga matches in charge or any of his last 11 in all competitions, insisted he would not resign and is not thought to be in immediate danger of the sack.

Were the worst to happen, he would be welcomed back with open arms to his former job as Sky Sports’ lead pundit, which he quit two months ago to begin his managerial career.

It is understood nothing has changed from December, when Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis agreed to release Neville from his contract.

Francis said at the time: “He will always be a friend of Sky Sports and we look forward to following the next chapter of his career closely, not least during our weekly La Liga coverage. And, of course, the door will always be open should he wish to return.”

Sky has yet to appoint a permanent replacement for Neville, filling the void left by the by the 40-year-old with its existing roster of co-commentators and pundits – as well as securing guest appearances from the likes of Frank Lampard and Craig Bellamy.

Neville’s travails are also likely to have killed off the slim chance of him succeeding Roy Hodgson as England manager if they flop at this summer’s European Championships, at which he will assist the 68-year-old.
