Former U.S. President George Bush is recovering in hospital after undergoing emergency heart surgery.

The Republican was operated on at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas on Tuesday (06 Aug 2013) after doctors discovered a blockage in an artery during a check-up on Monday (05 Aug 2013).

Bush had a stent placed in the artery and he is expected to return home on Wednesday (07 Aug 2013).

Freddy Ford, the 67 year old's publicist, says, "At the recommendation of his doctors, President Bush agreed to have a stent placed to open the blockage... President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday."
