There’s been a lot of hand wringing over the Giants’ offense this season.
And that’s understandable considering that through 13 games, the Giants rank 27th in the league in total offense, 30th in the league in rushing and have failed to reach 30 points in any game this season.
Yet there are plenty of those on the team who are taking a glass-is-half-full approach, given that the team’s record is 9-4, which includes a 10-7 victory over the Cowboys on Sunday,
“Imagine if we get the offense rolling and we put up more than 10 points,” said Justin Pugh, who said he is expecting to return against the Lions Sunday after missing five games with a knee injury. “We haven’t been putting up crazy numbers all year . . . I think if we get that rolling with this defense, watch out, we’re going to be a scary team to play. I think we still are a scary team to play. I don’t think a lot of people want to come and play the Giants come playoff time.”
Odell Beckham Jr. believes that the offense Giants fans see now won’t necessarily be the one they see in the playoffs. What’s the reason for his faith? A recent conversation he had with coach Ben McAdoo.
McAdoo told him about how when he was a tight ends coach with the Super Bowl XLV-winning Packers in 2010, the team was struggling on offense at the end of the season.
“Right before his team made the playoffs, he said they won the last game like 7-3,” Beckham said. “The offense wasn’t exactly there, and they ended up making it in, and pretty much destroyed everybody offensively throughout those games for the rest of the postseason.”
The Packers actually finished 10th in the league in scoring that year, but they lost to the Lions, 7-3, in Week 14, and won, 10-3, against the Bears in Week 17, to finish with 10 wins. They went on to win the Super Bowl that year and averaged 30.25 points per game in the postseason.
“I truly believe in timing of everything,” Beckham said. “I believe that it will all come together at the right time. It’s just a matter of when that time is. And I don’t know if we know.”
Notes & quotes: Keenan Robinson is listed as questionable with a shoulder injury. Robinson is the Giants middle linebacker in sub packages, so the team is hoping he will be available. Said McAdoo when asked who could step in for him: “[Robinson’s] played some good football for us. He’s really bought into the culture here and into the locker room . . . we’d have to wait to see how that goes, who’s up and who’s down, as far as who can contribute in his role. “ . . . The predicted bad weather wreaked havoc on the Lions travel plans. The team decided to fly out Friday night, a day early, to avoid the snow. That decision meant that they would have to switch hotels during their stay in New Jersey as the Miami Dolphins, who play the Jets on Saturday, were staying at the Lions pregame hotel on Friday night.
