A group known as Women in Aerospace Nigeria is seeking better representation of women in the nationβs aerospace sector.
The group of women who embarked on a solidarity march to Channels Televisionβs office in Abuja on Tuesday as part of their activities to mark this yearβs World Space Week, said women need to be given more roles in the sector.
President of the association, Engineer Nwanneka Ibekwe explained that women are under-represented in the sector despite the roles they have played in the design and management of Nigeriaβs satellites.
She further stated that the girl child needs to be encouraged to embrace space technology education and ultimately occupy leadership positions in the sector.
βThe sector where we find ourselves is actually a specialized one and we are still under-represented so we want to encourage more women to come,β she said.
βKnowing fully well that a girl today is a potential woman tomorrow, we want a competent replacement because we are actually advancing in this body and with time we are going to retire so we need competent hands,β Ibekwe added.
