Unknown gunmen in the wee hours of yesterday morning, stormed Foroupa community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, allegedly woke the 100-year-old mother of the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Wilberforce Igiri, from sleep before whisking her away to an unknown destination.
As stated by community sources, the gunmen, believed to be fully armed, came to the community in two speedboats and after shooting sporadically into the air, went for their target.
The kidnappers have not yet contacted the family.
The Police Public Relations Office (PPRO), Mr. Ansim Butswat, who confirmed the incident said though the police headquarters was still awaiting the detailed report of the Divisional Police Officer in Southern Ijaw, investigation has commenced.
The abduction of Madam Igiri has, however, triggered reaction with the APC accusing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of abdicating its responsibility to protect lives and property in the state.
The PDP, in its reaction, while condemning Mrs Igiri’s abduction noted that those behind the kidnapping are out to rubbish the achievement of the Dickson-led administration in the area of peace and security.
However, the state government directed security agencies to ensure the release of Mrs Igiri and fish out the kidnappers.
