Guus Hiddink has urged Chelsea to treat John Terry like Manchester United have treated their club legends in recent years.

The Blues confirmed on Friday that they have offered their captain a one-year contract extension after he had announced in January that he did not expect to be given a new deal.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s final game of the season against Leicester City, Hiddink emphasised the importance of the influence long-serving players such as Terry can have on the identity of their clubs.

"He is good for the younger people, the academy boys," the Dutchman told reporters. "Clubs must be very aware of using the strengths of those guys.

"I am always in favour of when they have had a beautiful career and are attached to the club. Manchester United has also some legends. Then a club has the opportunity to integrate them into their culture."

He added: "Most of the legends are simple people, they know the game, they have felt the game, they have felt the successes and they have felt also the failure.

"So they know the game and if they can transfer that to the young boys then it is perfect for the club."
