Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts has become the new president of Glantraet FC, who play on the island of Anglesey in the Welsh Alliance League in front of crowds of 40 people
Hollywood star Naomi Watts has agreed to become the new president of amateur Welsh outfit Glantraeth.
The club announced the news on Tuesday following correspondence with the two-time Oscar nominee, who is said to be "very excited" after spending time on a nearby farm owned by her grandparents.
Watts, perhaps best known for her role in David Lynch's 'Mulholland Drive', replaces Sir George Meyrick, who stepped down in August after 20 years as president.
Club secretary Stan Strickland, who suggested Watts for the role, told reporters: "She spent three years of her childhood here and attended school in Llangefni before becoming a major film star.
"I just thought 'if you don't ask, you don't get'. She has now got her publicist involved, so we could end up in the New York Times."
"The club are delighted to announce that Hollywood movie actress Naomi Watts has agreed to become the new President of Glantraeth, in fact she has told us in an email from LA that she is 'very excited' to be taking on this honorary position in the club," an official statement read.
"Her connection with Bodorgan comes about through the happy times she spent as a child living with her grandparents Nikki and Hugh Roberts at their farm in Llangristiolus on Anglesey. Naomi succeeds Sir George Meyrick who recently stood down after twenty years as president. We expect to have further contact with Naomi over the next few days."
The club added: "She is also a great friend of Nicole Kidman."
Watts' name will now feature on the club website, letterheads and match day programmes.
