In the midst of the massive Takata airbag campaign, Honda has issued an unrelated, voluntary recall for several units of the Accord.

The Japanese automaker's action has nothing to do with the affected airbag inflators, as it's due to possible moisture entry in the SRS electronic control unit that can cause corrosion and eventual malfunction.

If the SRS control unit fails, then the indicator will illuminate on the dashboard and, in the event of a crash, the airbags may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury or even death. Honda is aware of two injuries related to this problem.

Approximately 341,000 units of the Honda Accord Sedan, from the 2008-2010 model years, may suffer from this condition.

The company's dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and install a new SRS control unit, free of charge to the owners, however, the recall is not expected to start until fall, 2016, "due to the large volume of new parts needed to repair affected units".

Customers will eventually receive notification from Honda that replacement parts are available, however, until then, the automaker is willing to answer questions on the defect at 1-888-234-2138.
