“I couldn’t fault the performance in terms of effort and endeavour from both teams, two very good Championship teams. It was never going to be a classic in the conditions.”
Relentless rain and gale force winds contributed in part to Vokes’s goal, with the Hull keeper Allan McGregor, unable to hold an initial shot from Joey Barton.
That mistake was compounded by some erroneous finishing from Hernandez, who spurned two glorious opportunities to score and appeared disgruntled by his 76th minute substitution.
“He’s ok. There’s no problem,” Bruce said.
“Nobody should be alright if they’ve been subbed. I thought he looked a little bit leggy and we’ve got a long way to go with many games to play. He’s done fantastically well, I just thought we’d take him off to get a bit of freshness and bring on somebody [Chuba Akpom] who scored a hat-trick last week. So he’s not very happy but it’s part and parcel of it.”
Though there was little between the teams, Burnley’s margin of victory may have increased had they been awarded a penalty when Vokes was caught by McGregor’s boot. Instead, Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager was left frustrated when Vokes was booked for diving.
“We’ve struggled to get penalties all season,” Dyche said.
“Last season Ruud Gullit [in punditry] was saying ’they’re ridiculous because they don’t go down’. If our players do go down, we don’t get a penalty and he’s been caught.
“We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t to be honest.”
