Jacob Murphy says he researched Manchester City goalie Ederson’s recent performances to help net his first Newcastle United goal.

The £10million summer signing raced through in the second half before delightfully dinking the ball over the top of the most expensive keeper of all time.

After beating the £35million man at the Etihad Stadium, Toon winger Murphy said: “I felt confident and I’d seen highlights in recent weeks that people were chipping the goalie.

“I thought I just needed to keep my composure and hopefully he goes down and he went down and I put it over him.

“It was a great feeling to finally score for Newcastle United.

“I am buzzing with that but ultimately the result didn’t go our way so maybe that puts a little bit of a dampener on it.

“But on to the next one.”

Newcastle set up a late rally to get back into the game thanks to Murphy’s strike and came close to an equaliser when Mo Diame had Ederson in a sweat.

Murphy told NUFC TV: “We made it hard for them, the first half was all about containing them.

“Then it was about taking chances if we could created them.

“That wasn’t the case in the first half but in the second half we did create chances.

“We were close in the game at 2-1 and maybe we could have got the equaliser but we got stung.

“The positives we can take are creating chances against a top team.

“In the second half we were putting on pressure and we have to do that more.”

Despite the first defeat of the year, Murphy’s fine form has been a real bonus for the Magpies, and he reflected after the game: “I am building things up.

“I knew once I played more minutes that I can produce for the team with goals and assists.

“I just need to keep contributing.”
