The West Bromwich Albion midfielder and Republic of Ireland international played alongside Farren during his time at Derry City and said that he is "gutted" at the loss of a "great player, [an] even better man."

"Gutted to hear news of the death of my former teammate Mark Farren," McClean wrote on his Twitter page. "Great player, even better man, prayers are with his family, RIP buddy."

McClean, along with a host of other former team-mates and League of Ireland stars, actively campaigned to help Farren raise money for treatment.

Another Republic of Ireland international, Paddy Madden, also paid tribute to Farren, saying that he loved to watch the striker play for Derry City.

"RIP Mark Farren," Madden wrote. "Loved watching him play for Derry City and scoring goals, what a player."

Tributes have poured in from the Irish football community, with various League of Ireland clubs and the Professional Footballers' Assciation of Ireland (PFAI) sending messages of sympathy to the Farren family and friends.
