President Goodluck Jonathan will chair his last Council of State meeting today. It is scheduled to hold at the State House, Abuja by 11 am. The council which consists of the President (as the Chairman), Vice President, all former presidents or former heads of state, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria (CJN), president of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation, last met in February. One of the key responsibilities of the council is to advise the President in the exercise of his powers over Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including the appointments of members of the commission. The members also advise the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to the national census and compilation; prerogative of mercy; award of national honours; the National Judicial Council (including the appointment of the members, other than ex-officio); and the National Population Commission (including the appointment of members). The council also has the duty to approve the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.
