Julian Green could have been a hockey player instead of one of the most promising U.S. soccer players in recent history.

Before the midfielder became the youngest American to score in a World Cup match and prior to beginning a career with Bayern Munich, Green was hoping to one day become a professional hockey player.

"I'm a big hockey fan and ever since I was a little kid I played hockey and I also wanted to become a professional hockey player," he told Goal. "I'm a big fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning because I was born in Tampa and I try to watch as many games as possible."

Green played hockey for his hometown team TEV Miesbach but his aspirations on the ice were placed to the side as he began to pursue an opportunity to play soccer for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"It was a great experience and great to play with all the guys on the ice, but at the end I think I like football a little bit more," the 20-year-old said. "I think it was the right decision and I'm happy to be at Bayern and playing football."

Instead of playing in the NHL, Green will be spending the next few days rooting for the Lightning as they face the New York Islanders in the second round of the playoffs. He's predicting Tampa Bay to meet the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup finals.
