Kannywood has bid farewell to one of its beloved stars, Alhaji Mato Yakubu, widely recognized as Malam Nata’ala from the popular TV series ‘Dadin Kowa’. The veteran actor was laid to rest on Monday afternoon in Yobe State, Nigeria, following a funeral prayer held at the Emir of Fika Jumu’at Mosque in Potiskum.

A Legacy Forged in Comedy and Television

Malam Nata’ala passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, succumbing to a prolonged battle with cancer. Born on August 15, 1967, in Dambuwa Rijiya, Potiskum, his acting journey commenced in 1982. He initially honed his skills through stage plays in Jimeta, Adamawa State, before relocating to Kano to pursue a career in film. Renowned for his comedic prowess, he starred in numerous films alongside the late Rabilu Musa (Dan Ibro). However, it was his unforgettable portrayal in the ‘Dadin Kowa’ series, broadcast on Arewa24 TV, that garnered him widespread recognition and the enduring moniker “Malam Nata’ala.” Beyond the acclaimed series, he also delivered a memorable performance in the movie ‘A Duniya’, where he played a traditional Islamic teacher (Malami) leading a group of Almajirai.

Brave Battle and Widespread Support

The actor's health struggles became more publicly known around August 2025 when he was diagnosed with cancer. In a poignant viral video, he appealed for financial assistance and prayers, revealing the significant cost of his chemotherapy injections – N250,000 every three weeks for six months – in addition to other medical expenses and hospital admissions. Malam Nata’ala was 58 years old at the time of his passing and is survived by three wives and ten children. His medical treatment received substantial support, notably from Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, who eventually assumed full responsibility for his healthcare. He also benefited from various financial contributions from politicians and colleagues within the Kannywood industry.

International Generosity and Lasting Impact

Among the most heartwarming and impactful contributions was that from the President of Niger Republic, General Abdulrahman Tchani, whose assistance left a profound mark on the late actor and his family. The outpouring of support from both national and international figures underscores the immense respect and affection Malam Nata’ala commanded throughout his career.
