Codeine Seizure: 1,499 Bottles Recovered in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, has arrested 45-year-old Ashiru Bala and seized 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup following an intelligence-led operation in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area. The illicit drugs, transported from Abuja, were intended for local distribution, particularly for the upcoming Sallah celebrations.

State Commander CN Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal confirmed the arrest in a statement released by the Command's Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari. Operatives apprehended the suspect at his residence in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area, acting on credible intelligence.

Operation Targets Illicit Drug Supply

The seizure of 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup highlights the NDLEA's continuous efforts to disrupt the supply chain of illicit substances. Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment, which Bala had transported from Abuja, was destined for a local dealer in Kano. It was earmarked for illicit consumption, specifically in anticipation of the forthcoming Sallah celebrations, suggesting a targeted distribution network.

Suspect's Admissions and NDLEA's Commitment

The statement indicated that Ashiru Bala admitted to engaging in the transportation of illicit substances for approximately two years. He also disclosed that he had previously worked in township services in Abuja for four years. The command further confirmed that Bala received substantial payments for each consignment moved, indicating his full awareness of the illegal nature of his activities.

Commander Yahaya-Lawal reiterated the agency's dedication to community protection. “This arrest is a demonstration of our commitment to protecting communities from the harms of illicit substances. We will sustain pressure on drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice,” Lawal affirmed. The NDLEA continues its strategic offensive against drug trafficking to safeguard public health and security.
