Operatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kano have successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit substances to inmates at the Nomansland Magistrate Court Complex. Two suspects, Usman Khalid (25) and Bello Musa Ahmed (24), both residents of the Tsamiya (Brigade) area of Kano State, were apprehended in connection with the crime.
Drug Smuggling Attempt Uncovered at Kano Court
The incident, which saw officers attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Goron Dutse, make the arrests, involved attempts to throw Indian hemp and other illicit drugs to individuals held within the court premises. This proactive interception highlights the NCoS's commitment to maintaining strict security protocols and preventing the introduction of prohibited items into correctional environments, thereby bolstering public safety and combating drug-related activities.
NCoS Warns Against Intermingling with Inmates
In an official statement, CSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nasarawa, the command’s Public Relations Officer, issued a stern warning to the public. He cautioned against any unauthorized interaction or "intermingling" with inmates, particularly during their transportation to and from court appearances. Such actions, he stressed, constitute a grave security breach and are subject to legal penalties. The NCoS reiterates its dedication to the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates, asserting that any efforts to undermine this critical mandate will not be tolerated.
Suspects Handed Over to NDLEA for Prosecution
Following the arrests, Ado Inuwa, the Controller of Corrections for the Kano State Command, has directed the Legal and Intelligence Units to transfer both the suspects and the confiscated substances to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). This move ensures a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution, reinforcing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold law and order and eradicate drug trafficking within and around correctional facilities. The command urged residents to continue their cooperation with security agencies to sustain a secure environment.
