The Old Trafford legend says the players need to take responsibility for what happens on the pitch and move the ball quickly, instead of aiming to maintain possession
Roy Keane has called for Manchester United fans to stop booing Louis van Gaal and asked supporters to get behind the team.
Van Gaal has come in for criticism over United's style of play this season, with some reports suggesting the Dutchman would be sacked earlier in the season.
Speaking at a charity function in Northern Ireland, the former Old Trafford midfielder said fans should remain loyal to the club through difficult periods.
"I just can't understand the supporter, a proper supporter, and I do understand frustration when your team isn't doing well, but to boo a manager or the team... why?" he said. "Are you a supporter only for good days? Support the team. Get behind the team."
Keane also suggested the United players, not just Van Gaal, should shoulder some of the responsibility for the club's struggles this season.
He said: "I know the manager is getting a lot of criticism at the moment but sometimes the players have to take control of the situation. I always think if you can pass it forward quickly then do it. Possession is well and good but it's all about putting the ball in the back of the net.
"I see a lot of midfielders at Manchester United obsessed with possession and retaining the ball, but if you can do things quickly, do it."
