The former Italy coach also feels Massimiliani Allegri's side must get a good result in the first leg if they are to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals
Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira will be the key for the Serie A champions in their Champions League last-16 clash with Bayern Munich, according to Giovanni Trapattoni.
Last season’s runners-up welcome Pep Guardiola’s side to Turin for the first leg of their clash on Tuesday, with the hosts going into the tie as underdogs despite sitting top of Serie A.
Bayern topped Group F ahead of Arsenal but have injury problems in defence, where David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich are expected to feature at centre-back, and Trapattoni feels Khedira could play a key role.
"Allegri's men will to try to do something meaningful, and they must be clever from a tactical point of view," Trapattoni told Goal.
"The Germans, despite having a very technical team, in certain situations may find it hard, also because of their defensive injuries which are not to be underestimated.
"For the Bianconeri it will be vital to be able to count on the Khedira at his best. With the German in good form, the Juventus midfield assumes a completely different identity."
The 76-year-old also feels it is crucial Juventus come away from the first leg with a positive result if they are to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
"In these games, it's the symphony that makes the difference, the mechanisms of team, not the individual," he added.
"[Mario] Mandzukic is also a point of reference for Juventus in phases of non-possession and, moreover, he knows Bayern Munich very well.
"Juventus in the home game will have to be close to perfection. The first leg is about building the right path for the return: if things go well in Turin - inevitably - qualification becomes possible in Germany.
"Anything can happen really. Both teams have players with great experience who are used to playing these games and, therefore, the emotion will not get to either of them.
"The athletic condition will play an important part. To arrive in February in the best condition is essential if you want to go far in the Champions League."
