Anfield was full of noise and colour on Thursday night as Reds supporters answered their manager's request to create a decisive aura against their rivals
Jurgen Klopp felt Liverpool supporters hit rewind and delivered the historic atmosphere the club became famed for during their 2-0 Europa League victory over Manchester United.
The volume at Anfield was amplified on Thursday night as the clubs met in continental competition for the first time. The Kop was already in full voice long before kick off in the last-16 encounter, with the rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone lasting close to five minutes.
When Daniel Sturridge converted a penalty to open the scoring in the first leg, the noise inside the stadium amplified. And when Roberto Firmino added the second on 73 minutes, a red flare was set off in the Main Stand as the home fans swung their scarves in unison.
The scenes were incredible and greatly appreciated by Klopp.
“The atmosphere tonight was unbelievable. It was really great and I want to say thank you to everybody that was involved in this atmosphere,” he said.
“It was easy to enjoy from the first until the last second. That was Liverpool how I knew it before I came here, so that was really, really great.
“Thank you for this.”
Louis van Gaal urged United fans to replicate the encouragement in the second leg. "I have to say that Liverpool created an atmosphere that was fantastic,” he said.
“Losing 2-0 is a difficult result for us, but we have to create an atmosphere like that next week.”
