The Kwara State Government has concluded arrangement to strengthen the cultism law in the state to check the current increase in cultists’ activities in the state.
The new law when implemented will see the culprit spending between 10 and 15 years behind bars and the property and buildings being used for the nefarious activities confiscated by the government.
In recent times, there has been increase in the activities of cultists in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State which has led to the killings and counter killings.
The police authority has been parading cult suspects almost on a monthly basis and had assured the state’s residents of its readiness to work with relevant authorities to bring the menace to an end.
Briefing reporters on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting which focused on the issue, the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Kamaldeen Ajibade, explained that a new bill would be sent to the state legislature to strengthen the existing bill on cultism.
On the confiscation of the property and buildings used for the crime, Mr Ajibade said it would be part of the new measure.
He denied the insinuation that the government has whittled down the law on cultism which had made cultists to have a free-day in recent times, adding that tougher measures will now be introduced.
On his part, the State Commissioner for information, Mahmud Ajeigbe, said that the government had realised the need to strengthen the existing law.
He urged parents to constantly monitor their wards who are students in higher institutions to guard against moving with bad friends.
The people of Ilorin are eagerly awaiting the total eradication of cult activities which many said had become rampant and disturbing.
