Lagos-Abeokuta Crash: Six Killed in Tragic Lorry Accident
Six people have tragically died and two others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving a vegetable oil tanker, which suffered brake failure on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway near Ota on Tuesday.
A devastating multi-vehicle collision occurred at the Old Toll Gate, Ota, along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway on Tuesday, reportedly claiming six lives and leaving two others injured. The incident involved an articulated vehicle with the registration number EKY 913 YH, alongside two other vehicles.
Brake Failure Leads to Fatalities
It was established that the articulated vehicle, a tanker transporting vegetable oil, purportedly experienced a catastrophic brake failure. Following this mechanical malfunction, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then ploughed into individuals standing by the roadside, resulting in six fatalities and injuring two others.
Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, spokesperson for the state sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the details in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday. Odunsi-Oyewole stated, “A tragic road traffic crash occurred today at approximately 08:00 hrs at the Old Toll Gate, Ota. The incident resulted in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to two others.”
Emergency Response and Investigation
The spokesperson further elaborated: “The crash involved an articulated vehicle (vegetable oil tanker) with registration number EKY 913 YH and two other vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicate that the articulated vehicle suffered a mechanical brake failure whilst navigating the ever-busy toll gate area. The driver subsequently lost control and rammed into the other vehicles and bystanders. Six adults were confirmed dead (5 males, 1 female). Two other people sustained various degrees of injuries.”
FRSC rescue teams promptly evacuated all victims to Ota General Hospital. The injured survivors are currently undergoing urgent medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased have been respectfully deposited at the Ifo General Hospital morgue.
