'Lamar Odom has checked into rehab,' said his rep on Thursday.
'After consulting with his family and friends, and meeting with Dr Travis Stork of The Doctors, he has decided it is best he take time to focus on himself.'
She added: 'He is dedicated to leading a healthy lifestyle and being the best father he can be to his children. Lamar asks that the public please respect his privacy at this time and truly appreciates the love and support of his family, friends and fans. He will talk about his journey in January on The Doctors.'
The series heralded its exclusive in which the former LA Lakers star sits down with host Stork as he 'takes his first courageous steps on the road to rehab.'
The show also revealed that they will catch up with the star after he gets out of rehab in January in a follow-up special.
The clip promises it will be 'a candid confessional about everything...the brothel, the overdose, the coma, the Kardashians and his demons.'
It shows the 37-year-old sitting in a room, dimly lit with candles, as Stork asks: 'There have been reports that you've still been using substances. Is that true or false?'

Lamar, wearing a blue shirt and black trousers, looks down and there's an agonising silence, but if viewers want the answer they will have to tune in in January.
The trailer finished off by saying: 'It's Lamar Odom's long journey back and only one show is with him as he takes his first courageous steps on the road to rehab.'
It is 14 months since the former Laker was found unconscious in the Love Ranch brothel after a near fatal drug overdose that left him in a coma for some weeks.
Khloe had started divorce proceedings, but put them off as her husband fought for his life. While there was talk of a reconciliation once Lamar came out of hospital, that did not happen.

Lamar continues to struggle with long-term health issues and recently checked himself into rehab to make sure he stays healthy with the final date of his divorce from Khloe due on Saturday.
It's also the date of the death of his son, Jayden, who was born on December 15, 2005 but died the following June from SIDS.
Lamar apparently 'feared the anniversary would push him over the edge,' according to TMZ.
