Chief Chris Uche (SAN), who is a lawyer to a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the former minister’s re-arrest.

Mohammed was said to have been re-arrested last week Tuesday by the operatives of the commission and had since been in detention.

But in a petition to the EFCC, Uche said the former minister’s re-arrest and continued detention amounted to contempt of court having been granted bail by an FCT High Court on November 26, 2016 on the same allegation after spending about 42 days in detention last year.

In the letter addressed to the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, dated May 5, 2017 the lawyer demanded that the former minister should be released on bail.

He said there was no justification for Mohammed’s continued detention.

He said he was contemplating filing a case of contempt against the EFCC for violating the order by the FCT High Court for the former minister’s release on bail.

Uche explained that his client had not violated his bail conditions since he had maintained regular visits to the EFCC headquarters as was stipulated in the bail conditions.
