Rhodes, making his first start since joining for £9m from Blackburn Rovers, found the net with a first-half header. However, the effort was ruled out after the ball was judged to have gone out of play before Emilio Nsue's cross. Replays suggested the decision was incorrect, and Middlesbrough's Spanish head coach said: "It's the second time we've had a disallowed goal recently, and I'm starting to get tired with some of the decisions."

"It's important that if you can't win the game not to lose it," Konstantopoulos said after Middlesbrough stretched their sequence without a victory to five games. He added: "Every team has a little blip or bad patch along the way and as long as we stay up there we'll be alright and we'll soon start firing on all cylinders again. The way it turned out, it was a battling point with 10 men."

There was plenty to keep Sky's armchair audience entertained with Leeds again proving why they are such a small screen draw as the club's owner Massimo Cellino used his programme notes to escalate his row with the TV companies he insists exert too much influence over the scheduling of fixtures for live coverage.

Supporters remain dubious as to the motives of the out-spoken Italian, and before kick-off, the Leeds fans' group 'Time to go Massimo' beamed messages onto the Elland Road stands urging Cellino to quit.

Rhodes looked more of a threat when the visitors switched to two up front after the break, and the Scotland international could have helped himself to a hat-trick. Giuseppe Bellusci also cleared off the line from Gaston Ramirez as Middlesbrough pressed, but Karanka's side was fortunate not to fall behind when on-loan Leicester defender Ritchie De Laet volleyed Charlie Taylor's corner against his own crossbar.

It's just one win in nine games for Leeds, but manager Steve Evans insisted: "We were on top for most of the game and we should have won. You can see why Middlesbrough don't concede many goals. The first save from Dimi to deny Doukara is the save of the season for me. We've only got a point to show for our efforts but it was a wonderful display."
