Legislative Aides To Shutdown National Assembly Over Unpaid Allowances

National Assembly complex

The National Assembly Legislative Aide Forum (NASSLAF), has expressed disappointments over the poor welfare of legislative aides since its inception in June 2015.

Famzn News understands that the legislative aides are in five categories which include, Senior Legislative aides, Legislative Assistance 1 and 2, personal Assistant and secretary.

A statement by the NASSLAF said each of these categories are deprived of their training, allowance and that an aide is entitled to 74,400 DTA allowance every three months and the severance allowance of 34,400 for each aide at the end of the tenure.

It noted that the legislative aides at both chambers are worried because “if the DTA statutory allowances are not paid, what then is our faith that our complete severance allowance will be paid”?

NASSLAF said in the statement that only three months allowance has been paid since 2015.

The statement said the aides expressed fear that the decision to withhold the balance of about ten months by the management could be deliberate as the 8th Assembly will soon come to an end.

The forum asked ” If our allowance are not paid what is our hope that our severance would also be paid.? ”

“We were told by the legislative aides of the 7th Assembly that their own severance was not fully paid and we do not want to be a victim so we call on relevant authority to be aware of our plight and hardship.

“We will reject it if our severance entitlement are not paid in full as stipulated in the rules”, it added.

The statement noted that the aides came on board June 9, 2015. It added that a “DTA is for 3months so from June 2015 -August 2018 in total is 13 DTA’s and the management has only paid just four and a half months.

NASSLAF said in January 2018, the aides were paid 40,000 instead of 74,000. The development means the aides have outstanding of 10 DTA.
